May 4th Recap
Irwindale, Calif. - - A good crowd of fans turned who turned out to see full range of racing machines at Irwindale for round three of the 2013 NASCAR season were treated to some spirited contests that saw lap after lap of typical Irwindale three-wide racing with every position on the track, first to last being squabbled over on just about every lap.
In the racing action Beaumont's Ryan Bragdon avoided an early laps punch-up among the Mini-Stock leaders to take home one of those cool first place Irwindale Speedway helmet trophies. The Pick Your Part Southwest Tour Trucks had a popular winner, local firefighter Neil Conrad, who made very few mistakes on the banked oval and won the day five full seconds ahead of second place (that's a whole bunch on this track!).
Gary Reed from La Verne notched his first ever win in the Super Stock division in a wire-to-wire run that saw Long Beach "iron man" Zach Green get his second second place in back to back races.
After about lap 30, the Lucas Oil Late Model 50-lap feature was something of a runaway for Highland's Toni McCray. The real fight of the night was for second between Ryan Partridge (Rancho Cucamonga) and Covina's Mike Johnson.
A small field of racers (only 5 cars) contested the Pick Your Part Outlaw Figure 8's ... and only three cars finished the crazed melee. The trailer race (above) was something of a motorized ballet (that is if you had a whole herd of drunken elephants skating on a greased ice pond). At the end of all the (expected, highly-anticipated and wildly-cheered) carnage, the fans "voted" for the winner and Robert Rice from Hawthorne got the loudest cheers and the helmet trophy.
