Armed Forces Appreciation Night Saturday May 3rd
Irwindale Speedway Presents:
ARMED FORCES APPRECIATION NIGHT
NASCAR Racing - Saturday Night, May 3
Irwindale, Calif. - - This week, on Saturday May 3, the Speedway will honor members of the Armed Forces with a special night of NASCAR racing featuring five divisions of fast stock car in six separate racing events (the quick Irwindale Race Trucks will run two separate full points races on Saturday night).
The weather is turning balmy and the racing is getting serious even this early in the season ... and the family fans are all lovin' their live and local NASCAR Nights at Irwindale. Irwindale's fastest NASCAR weekly racing series, the Super Late Models, will take to the Irwindale asphalt for the first time in the 2014 season.
The track's 2013 Champ, and winningest-ever driver at the Speedway (not to mention his being the pride of San Fernando), Rip Michels will not be back (driving) in the Super Lates this year. He's taken on the job of chief wrench for Highland's Tony McCray and has left the door wide open for any one of the 30 other SLM drivers who made 2013 so exciting.
Obviously Toni McCray will be back and (with Michels' help) looking to finish just one place higher than she did last year. McCray, the 2013 Irwindale Driver of the Year, was only 24 points behind (396 to 372) the Ripster at the end of last year's 8-race season. Behind her there's a strong field of "Super" racers looking for some daylight, many of whom might be well be pleased that the guy who won 6 of the 8 races in the 2013 championship series is wrenchin' instead of racin' this year.
We have another perfect record going in the Irwindale Super Stocks
Another Green in the lead! Garret Green (son of champion driver Jeff Green and brother of champion Zack) is the points leader of the Seidner's Collision Center Mini-Stocks. Of course that was only their first race of the season (of eight total rounds through October 18) but a points lead is a points lead for the lad from Long Beach. Dusty Morgan, from nearby Covina, ran second in the first race, and Bud Smith (Huntington Beach) is your third points man going into the May 3race.
... And then there's the Irwindale Skid Plate Cars ... weird, cross-wired, wonderful (???) machines with steel skids where their rear wheels should be and where drivers often miss their turn-in points because of the tears in their eyes from laughing so hard about how it was in the turn before this one ... They actually do count laps here, but no one seems to really care because of the nut-case/crazy show that they're a part of. For fans that have not witnessed them ... Google "Irwindale Skid Plate Cars" and be informed and entertained. Expect a full field of ISPCs on Saturday night, expect sparks, sudden spins, and surprise ... Colorful? You betcha!
As mentioned in the introduction, Irwindale will salute the American armed forces on May 3 with some special pre-race appearances and presentations by the Patriot Guard Riders, Pinups for Patriots, the American Veterans Alliance, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Victor Hurtado from CAMMO will sing the national anthem before the races at 7PM.
Marine Corps veteran Alex Minsky, who lost a leg in Iraq, will be honored as the night's Grand Marshal and will give the famous "Start Engines!" command for the first race of the evening.
All members of the military (with ID) will be admitted for $5 on Saturday night.
The Speedway is located at 500 Speedway Drive in Irwindale, California, right on the 605 freeway at the 210.
